In today's webisode, I prepare my favorite power breakfast, which is inspired by a magical weekend in Palm Springs, when I first visited Hadley Fruit Orchards to taste their famous "Date Shake." This creamy blend of dates, bananas and ice cream was all the rage in the 60's and 70's. The shake was delicious - I really loved the combination of ingredients - but it was too rich for my taste. So I came up with this fake-out version, which I like even better than the original. Instead of ice cream, the almond milk and banana, combined with a handful of ice, blends into something creamy and seemingly decadent. This is a healthy breakfast masquerading as something far more indulgent. And because of the protein in the almond butter, it carries me to my lunch hour.
Full recipe after the jump.

My morning ritual! There's a tiger in my tank!
That shake looks delicious and your hike is a dream. That view is gorgeous. What a great way to start off the day! Love these webisodes.
I want to make this shake every day. Will you be my date forever?
Inspired to dust off the old blender and try this!
You should try freezing your banana so you don't have to use ice!
this video makes me want to start my day early with breakfast and workout. xo
love, love, love the new webisodes!! Can't wait to try this...
i love how simple it is. also love how you leave little imperfections in your webisodes and don't overedit... makes them super accessible :)
Coz-alicious!!!
xo
love this lady!! can't wait to try it at home...and try to sneak it in on the girlies. they are so picky right now. it's a problem!
xo
ps - you are my four year old's new favorite "cooking show" (total compliment - she's wise beyond her years ;) )
I LOVE THIS!! you're a natural!!
p.s. date shake!! also known as dake shake!
My fave webisode yet! I have all these ingredients at home at the moment and can't wait to try this tomorrow morning!
I can't wait to try this tomorrow morning before my workout...looks soooo much better than a power bar! :) Another beautiful webisode!
watched it again! love it. xo
It's vegan shake! One often forgets that dates are a strong natural sweetener, it's a great idea to add them here.
But I hope the shake is not too sweet because of both the dates and the naturally sweet banana too...
mmm... that sounds so good but I cannot eat bananas! (crying) substitution suggestions? I have a feeling it would be really tasty sans banana too.
Another charming webisode!
I love almond butter in smoothies and I often mix it with frozen raspberries and a banana. The best thing about this smoothie is that I have all of the ingredients in my kitchen and I look forward to trying it for breakfast tomorrow!
@sg - you would totally be in business without the banana! however - you might want to thicken it with some yogurt or another type of fruit or just leave it out! let me know how it goes.
holy shit this is good - i just whipped it up! i've been making a variation of this smoothie for ions but the addition of the cinnamon really makes it. thanks for sharing.
Going to get me some dates after work! Can't wait for the next webisode.
Great video and your smoothie looks so inviting. I'll definitely try it. Please check out my recent post where I have an incredibly delcious berry smoothie. In it I use crystalized ginger. Surprisingly it gives it an incredible flavor but is disguised in the smoothie.
As always i love your posts and videos.
Looks awesome Heather! I've actually never worn. Can we come over and wear this one morning or has that closet been closed?
Thank you for sharing this recipe. I will try it. Great and so professional video as usual. Thanks!!!
Sandy
Heather,
This post is pure nostalgia for me. Before Hadley's there was Ripple Date Gardens owned by my aunt and uncle. It was my Aunt Tat who popularized (we like to say invented) the date shake in the early 40's. And yes, it was incredibly rich, so looking forward to trying yours. Thanks for the memories. Here's a fun pix...

Looks delicious! And oh so cozy in a little mason jar. Can't wait to try, thanks for sharing!
i've been chugging date shakes from the cafe near my office all summer long. i used to make them at home but i recently dropped the blender jar and smashed it to smithereens!
just watched this video and pulled out the cuisinart because the temptation was just too strong. worked like a charm!
yum and great video!
loving on these webisodes, Heather!
Que rico! Going to try this ASAP!!! and thanks for PDF'ing the recipe for ez printing...very thoughtful. Looking forward to the next webisode...love them muchisimo :)
I am loving your webisodes so, so much.
You are a total natural!
A little tip to try: use frozen bananas instead of ice. Just peel ripe bananas, line a plate or tray with parchment paper, place bananas on the paper covered plate/tray, and pop them in the freezer. This way you still get a cold smoothie that's more flavorful & less watery.
Delicioso! My favorite shake in the world. It's also great for lactose-free people. More webisodes PLEASE!
love this. Need blender, stat. xx
I love this video. Going to make that this weekend. Thank you, Heather! :)
Made the shake this morning and I LOVE it. I'm making it a part of my weekly routine before workouts! Thank you, Heather!!
Made it. Loved it. Must find more almond milk.
Will definitely try it as I loved getting date shakes at Hadley's as a kid and in Newport Beach at the Shake Shack!
I make a version of this recipe except I add coconut and cardamon. I use coconut milk (the kind in the dairy section), sunflower butter, cardamon, dates, and shredded coconut. I can not have dairy or nuts, so this shake is really a treat! I love the video!
Amanda

@Mary Anne: thank you so much!!! glad you're back!!!
Made it this morning and added raw kale (a big handful of leaves, no stem). Sooo good! Thanks for the inspiration.
Yum!! Can't wait to try this :)
