In Defense of Gwyneth and Her Cookbook

Hola readers. I have a confession. I bought Gwyneth Paltrow's just released cookbook this past weekend. While shopping for a friend's birthday gift, I stumbled upon it and it was as if my fingers were magnetically drawn to the cover.

This cookbook has received mixed reviews. Many people seem to intensely dislike it. But guess what, guys? I love it. And here's why (hint: it's all about the cozy factor). Allow me take you on a tour of my new favorite cookbook, My Father's Daughter: Delicious, Easy Recipes Celebrating Family & Togetherness.

IMG_9743

In the introduction, Gwyneth writes that she developed her passion for cooking from her father. She says, of her love of food, "This adoration was instilled in me by my incredible father, a supreme gourmand with a deep love for great food and wine. I always feel closest to my father, who was the love of my life until his death in 2002, when I am in the kitchen." And the book is peppered with candid snapshots of Gwyneth and her dad. This sets the stage for a book that is truly filled with love. I love love.

This page of GP & Blythe pics is right out of LA in the 70s. Again, natural and cozy and without any pretense.

IMG_9746

The book takes a serious turn here, as GP describes the last one-on-one meal with her father. They ate duck ragu (the below pic was snapped that night), talked about life and love and she had no idea that he would die three days later. In essence, this book is a love letter to her family. Which fills me with feelings of warmth.

IMG_9748

Let's talk about the food for a moment. Gwyneth is certainly not attempting to reinvent the wheel. The recipes are homey, simple, healthy and approachable. For example, I want to make this Crispy Garlic and Potato Cake like, immediately.

IMG_9753

After my sister made the fish tacos from GOOP, they have become one of my favorite quick weeknight dinners. Excited to try this version.

IMG_9750

I make a lot of fried rice (inspired by my friend Jeana Sohn) but GP's version introduces kale and brown rice, instead of my usual white. I made this earlier in the week, topped it with a fried egg and was in dinner heaven.

IMG_9754

As this is a book about family, there are several pictures of her children Apple and Moses scattered throughout And guess what? They're cute (I have since learned that these are not actually her kids but it's still a cozy pic). Simple pink peonies pretty gorgeous too.

IMG_9751

How about this dress? Can I have it? Bra straps showing? No make-up? GP is best at her most natural.

IMG_9752

Really? You hate this?

IMG_9755

In closing, Gywneth didn't have to write this book. She's clearly not motivated by money (fragrance is better for that) or by fame (she maxed out on fame a long time ago). But in her quest to be cozy and find comfort and share a little bit, she did. And I really can't hate that.

Super cozy!
I love how the photos in the book are so filled with light.
Love the embroidered dress too- she looks like quite the Earth mama in the pic where she is nose to nose with her child.
Great post Heather.
Really curious now to check out the book!

oh what a great post. i can't stop thinking of her since hearing her talk about her father last week on npr. I really want to get my hands on this book soon. already made the anchovy salad dressing recipe that was in the GOOP newsletter and it was easy and really delicious. Thanks for taking the time to photograph and post this- thoroughly enjoyed!

I absolutely agree with everything you said. I cannot wait to buy this book. It' all about her family and the influence that her father had on her life. That is very inspiring and certainly a positive topic that I would like to read about. And good recipes as well!

i'm not a foodie nor do i have much opinion either way on gwyneth (take her or leave her), but loved this post. it looks like a beautiful book and i hope people can enjoy it for what it is - not what they wanted it to be. thanks for sharing images!

Thank you so much for reviewing this. I was turned off after reading other reviews. You've convinced me that it is worth a try. I love the passion and story behind a cookbook almost as much as the recipes. It just inspires me to try harder in the kitchen and usually that translates into my life in general.

I have to agree. My sister gave me the book for my birthday last week, and I devoured it in one night. Her writing is so personal and easy, and I was really moved by how much she shared about her family. People can say what they want about Gwyneth, but I think they'd be surprised to see how unpretentious and real she is.

Alex's post still has me laughing.
I LOVE Gwyneth too, and will be buying this book today.
I have loved her recipes on her blog GOOP, yes, the fish tacos are amazing.
Thanks for being the defender that you are :)

Gwyneth is 100% cozy all the time. I love GP because she's trying new things all the time...exploring new mediums to express herself. I think she's a great example...and I love her.

I'm with you. I haven't bought the book, but I feel criticisms of her are somewhat undeserved. After all, she's just a gal who loves food and wants to share it with us in a personal (and beautiful) way. What's really wrong with that?

thank you for writing this

i am on the fence about her some times
i seem to be more attracted to her as a person in her private life than anything she may do in the spot light.

i will be picking this up as soon as i can
also , because i am in a cooking rut

love your blog!

Unfortunately the critics often deconstructed and not help create a free and curious spirit!

I'm a fan of family food moments - I spent the weekend with my Pops passing down my Grandmas's carving knife and flatware set. I totally get that the food can make the memory. I means, what's more cozytown than that, right? Great post, and i do give the thumbs up on the bra strap. And a basic one at that. !!!

I love her--nice review! I've always found her interest in so many things, trying out different jobs (so to speak) very relatable. And she's just clearly so talented.

I have always found Gyewneth nothing, but lovely as well.

i love this cookbook - glad you gave her the props she deserves. haters gonna hate.

Hello! {Just directed her from Michelle @ Pretty Mommy.} Love this post because I was so excited for this book to come out... not because it's Gwyneth, but because hands down- every single dish that I've made via GOOP has been exceptional, and most have become "regular" dishes... even simple things like maple whipped cream or turkey ragu. Then I started to see lots of "hate" comments, but after I looked at the book myself- I *still wanted it! I have a very good feeling that it's going to be mine tomorrow!

I'm definitely going to take a look at this book now if only to see all those great family photos from the 70s.

I was sort of ambivalent about this book, but now might have to pick up a copy. I have never really understood the tendency we have to build people up and then break them down - why all the meanness out there about GP? Great reason to write a book, and as long as the recipes are good, I might have to give it a try. Thank you!
